The memory of Fish
By: Colin McGuire

Rumour has it
their memories
last only one second...

they must never remember the faces
of their children or their parents
they must never romanticise the past

they must never cry either
seeking that which has gone by and
they must never dwell on what must die

just think of it!

Hours swimming in a tiny bowl
perhaps a big finger presses
the side of the bowl

they swim away
they do not stop to think
do not think to stop

look how simply they swim!
And try not to envy
the memory of fish!
