High Desert Solitude
By: slider

Afternoon rains, cool desert night
I sit on canyon rim
Breezes bring fecund smells of sage and thirsty earth.
Below me glitters the ribbon of desert life
A tiny creek bathed in starlight

Far from the pall of city lights
Milky Way splendor, glowing night sky
Slowly brightening, the moon rises and
Begins her procession across the night

In soft half light earth responds in dusky hues
Playful breezes stir quiet murmurs among the sages
A concert of muted colors and quarter notes bring
A dark Monet and desert night song

It is peace here on the canyon rim, legs dangling into the darkness
A lava perch, and wind at my back
Solitude overtakes me and rhythmic breathing is
The sum of all I am in that moment

The sharpness of stars
The softness of moonlight and corona
Of air full of moisture -
Dew will cover the morning

Ragged outlines of the far canyon wall
Sparkling creek below reflects
Piercing points of starlight
Rough lava cradles me

All is overcome by her softness, her glow
The mother of all that lives gathers in her children
Nurtures them, brings peace to their shadows
And in her presence, they find renewal
